Birding & Stewardship Series: Grasshopper Sparrow

Participants will go on an early morning birding walk through a restored grassland habitat, which we’ll access by van as it is off site and not open to the public. Along the way, we’ll learn how restoration efforts Duke Farms have supported our bird of the month, the grasshopper sparrow! Thanks to these efforts, many of the bird species that rely on grasslands and open fields can find nesting sites and food sources here on our grounds, and we’ll talk about birding for all of them. Also learn how vital these ecosystems are to bird populations, why restoration is important, and how Duke Farms did it!

Participants will come away with basic birding skills such as using binoculars, using field guides, and taking advantage of community science apps like eBird and Merlin.

Program Guidelines

Registration is required. Please let us know if you are no longer able to attend so your space can be offered to someone else. Cancellations received at least 48 hours in advance are eligible for a refund, if applicable. Programs at Duke Farms are RAIN or SHINE, but in the event of severe weather, classes may be canceled. Email notice will be given as early as possible via email and refunds will be issued in the case of cancellations.

Please note, we will be traveling through areas with increased potential for tick exposure. Please come prepared.
