Conservation Science at Duke Farms

Duke Farms Is A Living Lab Where Model Strategies Are Developed

A Center for Conservation Science

Restoring landscapes to support threatened and endangered wildlife requires actively managing invasive species, prioritizing native species and rigorously evaluating our strategies to make sure they are effective. All of our projects are working to increase biodiversity and carbon sequestration

A Center for Conservation Science

to protect endangered species of all kinds, both flora and fauna, from becoming extinct

Doris Duke
1912-1993

The Doris Duke Center for Conservation at Duke Farms is a national hub for applied conservation science, ecological restoration, and education. Building on Doris Duke’s legacy of environmental stewardship, the Center addresses critical challenges at the intersection of working lands, biodiversity, and climate through innovative research, nature-positive land use practices, and community engagement. Duke Farms’ 2,700-acre landscape, comprising productive farmland, restored habitats, wetlands, and peri-urban ecosystems, serves as a living laboratory where scientists, students, and land managers collaborate on scalable conservation solutions that enhance ecosystem services, biodiversity, and resilience.

The Center operates through Duke Farms where we integrate cutting-edge research with practical application to develop gold-standard conservation practices, facilitate stakeholder collaboration, and provide transformative education. As a convener and demonstration site, the Center connects diverse partners, scientists, policymakers, land managers, and the public, through hands-on training, immersive learning experiences, and communication of conservation science in action. With a strong focus on interdisciplinary collaboration and inclusive engagement, the Center is shaping a more equitable and sustainable future for people and nature.
